Entstanden ist diese Auseinandersetzung zu dem Pigment Indigo während meines zweimonatigen Praktikums bei Studio Nora Pao in Chiang Mai, Thailand, unter mithilfe meiner Kolleg*innen AoomAim und Tetsuya Onuki, deren Stimmen im Film zu hören sind.

Das Pigment Indigo hat eine lange, bewegte und diverse Geschichte. Auf der ganzen Welt ist das Färben mit Indigo verbreitet, und faszinierender Weise hat jede Region eigene Rezepte entwickelt um das Pigment chemisch so umzuwandeln, um es an stoffliche Fasern zu binden. Der Film setzt sich einerseits mit dem komplexen chemischen Prozess auseinander und vermittelt wie stark der Handel von Indigopigment mit Kolonialismus und ausbeutenden Arbeitsbedingungen in Verbindung steht.

This exploration of the pigment indigo came about during my two-month internship at Studio Nora Pao in Chiang Mai, Thailand, with the help of my colleagues AoomAim and Tetsuya Onuki, whose voices can be heard in the film.

The pigment indigo has a long, eventful and diverse history. Dyeing with indigo is widespread throughout the world, and fascinatingly, each region has developed its own recipes for chemically transforming the pigment so that it binds to fabric fibres. On the one hand, the film explores the complex chemical process and, on the other, highlights how closely the trade in indigo pigment is linked to colonialism and exploitative working conditions.
