The starting point is a cotton fabric from the late 18th century; the motifs depicted on it combine Western European and Indian stylistic elements to form a hybrid visual language. The textile was manufactured in India and produced specifically for export to the Dutch market – a testament to early global trade relations and cultural interconnections.
Taking this historical model as its starting point, the series translates its visual and thematic aspects into a contemporary formal language. It comprises embroidered felt panels and three fold-out wall objects that straddle the boundary between image and object.
